Windows 7 – wake up the computer for scheduled backup

If you have scheduled a backup on Windows 7 and you are wondering why the backup does not run on the scheduled time, you are one among  the  thousands who like and dislike Microsoft at the same time🙂

  1. I have scheduled Windows 7 backup to run daily at 7 PM
  2. I leave work at 5 PM and expect Windows to take a backup at 7 PM and all will be good
  3. However, Windows 7 does nothing at 7 PM because it is dozing off  ( aka  SLEEP Mode ) at 7 PM
  4. When i come back in the morning and give it a slap to wake up, it starts to back-up  ( takes a while which is annoying )

  1. First check what your Power Settings are in Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (for what plan is chosen)
  2. You will see when your display is set to off ( mine is after 10 mins )
  3. You will also see when your system is put to sleep ( mine is after 30 mins of inactivity )
  4. So when i leave my work at 5 PM, windows stays awake untill 5.30 PM and then it goes to sleep and no backup is taken at 7 PM
  5. To correct this you can do the following
  6. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Task Scheduler
  7. On the left hand pane, navigate to Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Backup
  8. On the top pane you should be able to see Automatic Backup - double click on it - a popup window should open
  9. Go to the Conditions tab and check : Wake the Computer To run this task
  10. Press ok and you are done !
  11. One more thing, dont forget to schedule the backup task itself :P
